Flower Care Guide

Fresh flowers are a living gift — a little care goes a long way toward making them last. Here's how to get the most out of your GOOL arrangement.

When your flowers arrive

Unwrap the bouquet as soon as possible and re-cut each stem at a 45° angle with sharp scissors or shears, about an inch from the bottom. This opens up fresh surface area so stems can actually drink.

Water & vase

Use a clean vase — bacteria from a dirty vase is one of the fastest ways to shorten a bouquet's life. Fill with cool water and, if your arrangement came with a flower food packet, add it now. No packet? A few drops of household bleach or a teaspoon of sugar plus a splash of lemon juice does a similar job.

Placement

Keep arrangements away from direct sunlight, heating/cooling vents, and ripening fruit (fruit releases ethylene gas, which speeds up wilting). A cool spot out of direct sun will roughly double the life of most blooms.

Upkeep

Change the water every 2-3 days, re-cutting stems each time you do. Remove any leaves that sit below the waterline — submerged foliage breaks down fast and clouds the water.

Special notes by flower

Roses like cool water and a fresh cut every few days. Hydrangeas drink through their petals too — a light mist helps on hot days. Tulips keep growing after they're cut, so don't be surprised if they lean toward the light. Gypsophila (baby's breath) is low-maintenance and often the last thing standing in a mixed bouquet.
