About Us
Our Story
What makes
Gool, Gool.
A love of flowers carried from the gardens of Dushanbe to a little shop on East Colfax.
Start with the name
Our name simply means flower.
In Persian, Tajik, Dari and Urdu, گل — gul, the way we say it, gool — means flower, and above all, the rose. It's one of the most loved words across the Persian-speaking world. It lives in poetry, in gardens, and in the names people give the people they adore.
So when our family opened a flower shop, there was really only ever one name for it. And the name we gave everything we build — Goolrang — joins two Persian words, gul (flower) and rang (color). Together: the color of flowers.
Where we come from
Roots in Dushanbe.
Our family's story begins in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan — a Persian-speaking city cradled by mountains in the heart of Central Asia. Fittingly, the name Dushanbe means "Monday": the whole city grew up around a Monday marketplace, a place where people came to trade what the earth had given that week. Flowers among them.
Long before there was ever a shop, there was a courtyard full of roses — the kind nearly every family in Dushanbe seemed to keep, tended by whoever in the house had the patience for it that season. Cut flowers were never treated as a luxury there. They were simply what you brought someone you loved, what you set on the table for a holiday, what you gave for no occasion at all because the garden had more to give than the house had vases. That habit, that instinct, never left us.
We come from a people who have always believed a home is not finished until something is blooming in it.
A thousand years of flowers
In Persian culture, flowers are not decoration. They are language.
Long before there were flower shops, there were Persian gardens — the chahar bagh, the fourfold garden of water, shade, fruit and bloom. The very word "paradise" comes to English from the Old Persian word for a walled garden.
Eight hundred years ago, the poet Saadi wrote Gulistan — literally, "The Rose Garden" — still one of the most beloved books in the Persian language. Every spring at Nowruz, the Persian new year, homes are welcomed into the season with hyacinth and fresh blossoms on the table. To give someone flowers, in that world, has always been a way of saying the things too large for words: I honor you. I grieve with you. I'm so glad you exist.
That is the inheritance we get to hand to Denver, one bouquet at a time.
"We didn't just bring our flowers to America. We brought the reason we love them."
Dushanbe → Denver
How we ended up on East Colfax.
When our family left Tajikistan for the United States, we didn't set out to open a flower shop again. Starting over rarely comes with a plan that tidy. But old habits — and old loves — have a way of following you across an ocean. Somewhere between rebuilding a life from scratch and learning a new city, flowers found their way back into ours.
Denver became home. And 903 East Colfax became the place we decided to plant something of our own — a shop that could hold both where we come from and where we've landed. We chose Colorado, and we've stayed in Colorado: no other cities, no other locations, just this one shop, in this one state, run by this one family.
Today, Gool Flower Shop is a small, family-run Denver florist. Every arrangement is designed by hand, in-house — never shipped in from a warehouse, never a stranger's flowers in a box. When you order from us, a real person here in Denver is making it, the same way it was always made: with care, and a little bit of love folded into the wrap.
